How To Cure Bad Breath

Smelly breath is disgusting – there’s simply no other way to put it. And it’s important that you view it that way, because you must feel the urgency of the problem, instead of trying to say that this is something you just have to live with – you must be compelled to find out how to cure bad breath.

There is scientific evidence that bad breath will make people want to avoid you – even people that like and love you. Because our human brains are hardwired to avoid people with bad breath. Did you know that some of the bacteria that cause bad breath are the kinds of bacteria that our brains are evolutionary programmed to avoid – because they pose a potential health risk?

This biological reaction takes place on a deeper level than social emotions even – it’s a hardwired survival mechanism. Even a loving partner will be repelled by bad breath, no matter what they think about it. Not only will they be repelled, it will lessen the attraction, love and affection they feel for you. No matter how committed they are to you – their brain doesn’t have another choice to respond.

There are many things you can do to cure bad breath. Good dental hygiene is of course the most obvious one, and one that you have to take care of. But if you are brushing your teeth two or three times a day, and you’re flossing them once a day, and you have bad breath – then there is another problem too.

Avoiding certain things that can make bad breath worse might also help you – coffee for example is known to give you a smelly breath a couple of hours after you drank it. And don’t even get me started on cigarettes here.

If you have a tongue or lip-piercing, and you have stinky breath, then it’s time to say goodbye to your nice fashion accessory. You basically artificially created another body orifice that provides a nesting ground for bacteria.

One thing you can do to improve the smell of your breath is to drink water regularly throughout the day. Water helps to keep your saliva flowing – and saliva is one of the best substances to fight the smell-causing bacteria. (That’s why it naturally occurs in your mouth – your body is a pretty perfect machine). Drinking alcohol on the other hand has exactly the opposite effect: it reduces your saliva flow and it weakens your mouth lining.

As a general rule of thumb, observe how your mouth feels: everything that makes your mouth feel dry is bad and everything that enhances saliva flow is good. (But even here there are exceptions. Even though chewing gum does increase your saliva flow, it can be detrimental to a healthy mouth flora, and habitually chewing gum can even worsen your breath problem).

Believe it or not – natural, plain yogurt – without sugar, aroma or any kind of flavoring – can also help you to counter bad breath. Because it drastically reduces hydrogen sulfide – which is one of the most common causes of bad breath.

In yogurt, there are different kinds of bacteria, but specially Lactobacillus bulgaricus and treptococcus thermophilus can be effective agents to get rid of the bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide.
