If you’ve ever sit or stood next to somebody with bad breath, you know how unpleasant it can be – it can become so annoying that one is hardly able to concentrate on anything other than the obnoxious smell. In fact, our brains are hardwired to be naturally repelled by this smell, and our evolutionary programming quickly makes escaping this smell a number on priority on our immediate to do list.
Because these smells actually indicate a potential health hazard – so a kind of “fight of flight” reaction starts to kick in.
When you have chronic bad breath, even friends and loved ones will avoid spending more time than necessary with you, let alone co-workers.
Here are some basic tips to help you deal with chronic bad breath.
Clean Tongue
Your tongue is a strong muscle, but on the surface, it’s kind of like a rugged carpet. And as with rugged carpets, stuff can get stuck inside. And the more stuff is stuck inside, the more welcoming it is for all kinds of bacteria that can then cause bad breath.
Mouth Wash & Bacteria
Note that it’s not the bacteria itself that smell bad, but rather the waste products they produce. You can basically think of bacteria as microscopic animals. (This is of course not a scientific explanation, and it’s in no way “correct”, but for the purpose of this article, it’s good enough). These animals “eat” something – the stuff that’s stuck on the surface of your tongue. And after they eat, they also excrete something – and it’s those waste products that smell bad. So when you take away the stuff that these bacteria feast upon, then you won’t have a problem with their smelly excretions in your mouth.
That’s why a mouth wash works so good at getting rid of bad breath – it kills the bacteria. However, there are around 600 different kinds of bacteria in your mouth, and hundreds of millions of them in each tiny drop of saliva. The large majority of them are actually good and helpful and even necessary bacteria. Only a small minority are “bad”.
The problem with a mouth wash is that it isn’t pretty discriminate – it basically kills all kinds of bacteria – even the good and necessary ones. Now, a mouth wash is a quick fix solution that provides temporary relief. But if you use it regularly, it becomes a problem. Because it basically destroys your healthy mouth flora and puts it out of balance. Thus worsening your halitosis problem in the long run.
What’s more, recent scientific studies have shown that regularly using a mouth wash can dramatically increase your risk of cancer. What exactly does dramatically mean? Well, how about a ninefold increase? That means people who regularly use a mouth wash are nine times more likely to develop cancer than other people.
I hope you realize that this is not a risk worth taking. Specially since it is not a solution at all.
So what can you do to counter bad breath?
Coffee & Alcohol
Well, avoiding caffeine and alcohol is good. That doesn’t mean you have to forever stay away from these drinks, it just means reducing their intake. They basically dehydrate your mouth, and that makes you more prone to the “nasty” kind of bacteria that you don’t want.
Brushing Your Tongue
Brushing your tongue is a good idea once a day. But in general, if you have a healthy mouth flora, there is no need to constantly brush or scrape your tongue. Because the “good” bacteria and a healthy saliva flow will make sure it stays clean.
Saliva Flow
Having lots of saliva flowing in your mouth is good. And one way to help a healthy saliva flow is to drink a lot of water. That doesn’t mean you have to gulp down two gallons of water in the morning. Quiet the contrary. Simply drink a glass of water every hour. More important than the amount of water that you drink is that you provide your body with a constant and regular flow of water, so that it stays properly hydrated all during the day.
Seeing A Dentist
Of course you can always go to see a dentist – if you have cavities, these can often be the causes of bad breath. However, notice that many dentists are not experts on bad breath – they simply learned a couple of methods to work with bad breath, and they will use any of these methods. oftentimes, they are not aware of other solutions that might be just as effective, but less costly and less involving than the solutions they will propose you.
